Open City Documentary Festival is proud to announce the programme for this year's 5th Festival, taking place 16 - 21 June at new venues across London including newly opened Regent Street Cinema, Curzon Bloomsbury and Picturehouse Central. This year the festival shines a spotlight on the golden age of Croatian cinema, and focuses on virtual reality technology and how it can be used for documentary storytelling.

The opening gala is Sam Klemke's Time Machine (Bloomsbury Theatre, Tue 16 June, 18.30), a unique and strange self-portrait of his life over 35 years, directed by Matthew Bate (Shut Up Little Man! An Audio Misadventure), followed by the opening night party at the Horse Hospital (20.30 onwards). The closing gala is The Closer We Get (Regents Street Cinema, Sun 22 June, 18.00) directed by Karen Guthrie and Nina Pope, following Karen's own family story, in the aftermath of her mother's devastating stroke - bringing to life an extraordinary story and a profound portrait of family survival.

Croatia: In Focus highlights work stemming from the development of the Audiovisual Centre opened in Croatia in 2008, which helped oversee the emergence of a new generation of Croatian documentary filmmakers, producing bold and innovative work; Naked Island (2014) (Wed 17 June, 20:45, JW3) an investigation into the disappearance of a man and the people brought together by a political prison in ex-Yugoslavia known as the island of broken souls; The Waiting Point (2013) (Sat 20 June, 19.30, Deptford Cinema), follows the everyday life at the crowded bus terminal in Rijeka, a town on the threshold of change; Mitch - The Diary of a Schizophrenic Patient (2014) (Sun 21 June, 13.15, Bertha Dochouse), is an auto-biographical project of a 40 year old artist living with schizophrenia; and Winter / Miracle is a stunning collaboration between Croatian artist filmmaker, Želijka Suková and Brazilian Gustavo Beck, on the modern Christian holiday.
